Multi-Ping Side Scan Sonars
Conventional side scan sonar systems use simultaneous single beams per side to generate an image of the sea floor. The physics of this type of sonar results in degradation of image resolution with range from the tow-fish and requires speeds of 5 knots or less to insure 100 percent seabed coverage and detection of small objects. With the use of Multi-ping systems, the towing speed of the sonar can be significantly increased whilst maintaining the same coverage and detection capabilities. This offers the surveyor a higher rate of effort and subsequent reduced operating costs.
